Every solid and lasting relationship in life starts with trust. You have no doubt seen what happens to couples or friendships when the trust is broken. It can take a lifetime to build up that trust but only a moment to lose it.
The same principle holds true for those businesses that you frequent, for example your dry-cleaner, your favorite restaurant, or your hair stylist. You trust that these businesses will provide you with the same quality of service that you are used to receiving.
Certain relationships will require a higher degree of trust then others. A higher level of trust is required for your babysitter or financial advisor than the dry-cleaner or your favorite ice cream place. The amount of time it takes to build those relationship increases as the required degree of trust increase.
Every once in a while, you’re put in a situation where you have to open up your home for work to be done inside your house, such as having a plumbing issue or your air conditioner stopped working.
What level of trust do you think is required from these companies? It ranks fairly high. With that in mind, most people simple turn to a quick google search to determine who they’re going to let into their home, with no existing relationship or trust in place.
Often these services can cost few hundred dollars or more and there is virtually no way to verify exactly what was done except to see or feel the result, your air is back on or your water leak stopped.
So how can you find a trustworthy company, to let in your home, when you’re in an emergency situation? A referral from a family member or friend is ideal but if you have to cold call a company, there are a few things you should find out and look for before making your choice.
When you’re talking on the phone with the prospective company, ask…
– How long has the company been in business?
– Are they properly licensed and insured?
– Do they have an actual place of business?
– Do their technicians wear a uniform?
When they arrive at your home…
– Are they knowledgeable about the repair or do they come off as “salesy”?
– Are they conscious of your carpet and flooring by covering their shoes?
– Do you feel comfortable with them in your home?
Just like at the doctor’s office, you want to ask the question that you don’t understand because any professional company will take the time to help you understand.
Its no secret that, over the years, certain service industries have received a negative connotation. At the end of the day, you as the client, should feel a sense of trust in the person and company handling your in-home services.
